About Us

Claremont White Dorpers was started with a dream.

Kim McIntosh was raised on a farm near Taralga. He learned the ways of farming sheep and cattle from his father and grandfather. Kim met and fell in love with Lia who was a born and bred city girl. Kim compromised and they chose to settle and raise a family in Canberra. However the desire of working the land never left Kim.

Kim and Lia raised four children in Canberra: Geoffrey, Anthony, Jessica and Alison. Animals were always part of the family, with the girls constantly finding some kind of stray.

In the early 90's Kim and Lia built a family home in South Canberra and met their now long time friends and farm hands Jeff and Judy Brown. As the children started finishing school, Kim knew he wanted to return to the land.  With some gentle encouragement Lia eventually agreed to start looking for a property. Lia was very specific with what she wanted: no dirt roads and no more then 30 minutes from Canberra. Gundaroo fell perfectly into her requirements and after looking at several properties Kim started to fall in love with the area.

On Murrumbateman Road, Kim and Lia found exactly what they were looking for and so the dream finally started to become reality with the purchase of 200 acres.

Naming the farm was easy - Kim knew he wanted to name it after his Grandfathers farm where he spent many boyhood hours. Before the house was built, the Claremont name was carved into the wooden sign that hangs proudly at the front gate.

Choosing to breed Dorpers was a long researched task; initially Kim wanted to raise Lowline cattle but the farm was not suitable. After further research, Kim learned that this hardy breed was well suited to the lay of the land and to Kim and Lia's working/farming lifestyle.

Originally Kim and Lia purchased several 1st and 2nd cross Dorpers.  After two seasons they chose to focus on breeding quality stud White Dorpers. The market at the time was not an easy one to enter. Kim selected quality ewes to form his foundation and then introduced some lambs born via embryo transfer. With careful selection,  Kim and Lia are producing quality stud animals that meet the high South African "Standard Of Excellence". All stud animals bred on the farm are viewed and classed by an official South African inspector. This gives all prospective clients confidence in the quality of the animals they are purchasing.

And so what started as a dream, has become a reality.

CLAREMONT WHITE DORPERS is making a name for our  High Quality Stock and  Well-managed, efficient Farm.
